Energy is simply directing a differential for a purpose. It be the movement of high energy to low in the form of light, heat, sound, pressure or anything else.

Therefore, Batteries are anything that store potential differences to be later directed.

These can be stored chemically (oil/alcohol/rocket fuel) positionally (water tower/ dam/ trebuchet) or as a battery that holds electrical charge.
